‘Grihasthali’ scheme of Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, which was initiated for the conservation of old heritage buildings in the State, is a model. At least one room should be converted with neat toilet, good quality furniture and furnishings to accommodate travellers.
The objective of the ‘grihasthali’ scheme are as follows:
Opening a segment in heritage / village tourism
Conservation of old buildings in its original settings
Promotion of our traditional architecture style and its positive impact on environment
Providing employment to local people and more business for local products and services
Easy to establish additional rooms to the State for tourism accommodation without major investments on infrastructure
A good model in sustainable eco tourism policy for other State / National government to follow
For the travellers it gives rich experience and can enjoy our wealth and natural beauty, learning from our unique history and heritage apart from enjoying the homely cuisine
The latest international trend in the tourism sector, which is growing day-by-day is to support local people by staying in small, locally owned accommodation and try to help the local economy to the maximum possible extend.
